Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
