Unconquerable A Thing of the Past: Why The Indian Test Cricket Legacy Has Crumbled

India's unexpected 0-2 loss to the Proteas in the recently concluded Test series has plunged the side into crisis.

In the final match, South Africa handed India their heaviest loss in Test cricket, defying expectations. It marked the Proteas' first series win in India in a quarter-century and India's second defeat at home in just 12 months after a decade-plus without a home loss.

The positive trajectory built over the previous half-year has all but vanished and the careers of several players - along with head mentor the coach - are now uncertain.

Early Optimism Fades Quickly

The new-look squad's impressive performance in the UK this season, under a new captain, indicated a seamless changeover after the almost concurrent exits of veterans Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

A facile 2-0 victory over the Windies at the start of the domestic season boosted that belief, till the Proteas came and inflicted a devastating defeat.

India were somewhat unlucky that skipper Shubman Gill suffered an injury quickly in the initial match and took no further part in the contest. But that fails to account for the side of the well below standard performance in both Tests against the opposition.

Several established players suffered, and a few members hoping for long red-ball careers were shown as not up to the mark - in ability or temperament - for the longer format.

Concerning History

This was the second whitewash at home endured by India in just more than a year. In 2024, unfancied New Zealand had pulled off a surprising 3-0 victory which essentially denied the hosts a berth in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The recent defeat to the Proteas could damage India's hopes of making the decider of this cycle also.

After being third in the WTC table prior to the contest, India have been relegated to number five. Even though nine further games are remaining, a majority are against the Aussies. Usually, competing on home turf would be a significant benefit - even against the strong Australian side. But the failures against New Zealand and the Proteas offer no room for such comfort.

Causes of the Fall

The national team's vulnerability in red-ball cricket has been significantly highlighted. Nevertheless, why the team have struggled so much in Tests at home recently is remains puzzling.

Since the turn of the century, India were considered unbeatable in red-ball cricket at home. Under sweltering weather and on surfaces that helped spin and aided their squad, India brooked no opposition. A rare failure, such as in 2012-13 against England, was seen as an exception.

Now, the team look to be vulnerable at home.

Facing the Kiwis in last year and the Proteas currently, the home side were beaten at their own game. The surfaces they prepared to favor their game went wrong completely, as the opposition exploited them better, outplaying India's batsmen and bowlers when it was most crucial.

What Happened?

A few experts argue that the Indian team is struggling in home conditions because home surfaces have been modified from spinning tracks to fast tracks to prepare players to succeed in foreign conditions.

A few mention that the domestic T20 league, in which many overseas players participate, has reduced the unfamiliarity and challenge Indian conditions would pose to them before.

While there is a degree of accuracy in these views, it still does not explain the reason the team's showings at home have witnessed such a staggering decline.

Multiple Failings

Most former players diagnose a complex, multi-headed problem, not only one or two factors.

Analysts and squad members have pointed to multiple deficiencies post India's disappointing performance to the Proteas: underestimating the opposition, lack of preparation, poor choices, arrogance, regular alterations of the playing XI, and favoring white-ball over the longer format.

This was clear in the displays of the side.

Cricketers such as Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, of whom so much was expected, were punished for their carelessness, while Sudarshan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Jurel - who were aiming to establish their place in the team - came up short in ability and attitude, facing the fallout for their casual attitude.

Just a few - Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep, Mohammed Siraj and Sundar - lived up to their skill and fame - but not sufficiently to claim wins.

Management Questions

The review also included not only the cricketers - the selection panel and coaching staff were also criticized, spurred on by distraught fans and vocal past stars. In the spotlight of the scrutiny was team coach Gambhir.
