The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
