In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
