2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
The new appointee steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a more defined game identity.
The president noted that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy community desires.
This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Here is the full content from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a sharper identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our players.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To boost the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of talks, he starts with us on the specified date.
His guidance and experience in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having spent the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most well-known titles in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all eager to keep witnessing the development of the game in the months to come.
The President
Brinkman presently serves in the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a early access event. Then, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch explains. "Face the opponents with new abilities, risks, and challenges that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The option is in your hands."
Project Ethos does not have an announced debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as development continues.
